The Metropolitan Antonios defines its foundation around the first century by the monk Osios Loukas, while other researchers say that it was founded by Osios Meletios in the first century.

Tradition tells us that this monastery was originally built in another location, specifically at the boundaries of Agrabela and Kryovrisi, at the location of Panagia. Today there is a small church of Panagia there. According to tradition, this monastery was burnt down and was built in the place where it is today by Spilios Koklonis, lord of Porečos.

The monastery is poor in relics and sacred objects due to the looting it has suffered. They are preserved: A manuscript codex of the four Gospels on membrane, a diptych manuscript of 1698 by Abbot Seraphim and 18 sheets of manuscripts on membrane taken from the codex of another monastery.

The monastery owned a large estate of pastures in Agrabela and Portes in the former municipality of Dymi, South Achaia. The monastery's assets include the water mill and the water mill.

Ioannis Nouchakis, in his "Hellenic Geography" notes the following: 1901 Poretsu there is a Metochion (in the municipality of Dymi) and the monastery of Poretsu in which it continues and which was the Sigil of Patriarch Cyril, who in 1804 designated it as a Crusader independent of the Archbishop of Olena.

In 1943 the monastery was looted by the Germans and at the same time they burned 13 houses in Porečo and 35 in Morohova.  The priceless frescoes of the church were painted by the brothers George and Dimitrios Moschos in 1611, when Theodolos was the bishop of Olena. The Monastery of Poretsos has been a bastion of Christianity and the refuge of Hellenism in difficult times since the old times.

In 1824-1825, Asimakis Fotilas took refuge in it to avoid being arrested by Nikolettos Sofianopoulos sent by Kolettis.

Dionysios Kokkinos in "The Greek Revolution", volume 8, page 335 writes the following: When Kolettis was still in Kalavrita, he assigned Nikoletton Sofianopoulos, brother of P. Sofianopoulos, to search for and arrest Asimakin Fotilan and Paleon Patron Germanos. Sofianopoulos did not manage to reach Fotilas, who, learning of the pursuit, fled to the Monastery of Porechos, which was located on a cliff with a very difficult ascent due to snow...".

Also in a cave near the Monastery, Andreas Zaimis was hiding with his father and Asimakis Fotilas, who were looked after by the Pan. Ravazoula.

The monastery had numerous monks who were distinguished for their ethos, their unwavering faith and their great national contribution.

The monastery was listed as a settlement of Poretsos until it was abolished due to the restriction of the monks and for many years a primary school operated in it.

The monastery is commemorated on 15 August.
